Symptoms are acute pain, bleeding, and foul breath. Diagnosis is based on clinical findings. Treatment is gentle debridement, improved oral hygiene, mouth rinses, supportive care, and, if debridement must be delayed, antibiotics. Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG) is a type of necrotizing periodontal disease in which the necrosis is limited to the gingival tissues. Three specific clinical characteristics must be present to diagnose NUG, pain (usually of rapid onset) interdental necrosis, and bleeding. Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG), necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP), and necrotizing stomatitis (NS), collectively termed necrotizing gingivostomatitis (NG), represent a dramatic, but rare oral infection associated with diminished systemic resistance, including HIV infection.

Necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP) may be an extension of necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG) into the periodontal structures that leads to periodontal attachment and bone loss. Alternatively, NUP and NUG may be different diseases. To date, there is little evidence to support the progression of NUG to NUP or to establish a relationship between the two conditions as a single disease Necrotizing gingivitis and oral Kaposi sarcoma are common concomitants of HIV infection and both are regarded as indicators of HIV infection.

In spite of a very low CD4(+) T cell count and severe neutropenia, the necrotizing gingivitis responded favorably to standard periodontal treatment, and the oral ulcers healed after administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis is a common specific type of gingivitis. The disease manifests both acute and recurrent phases.

Local secondary favorable factor for necrotizing gingivitis development was defined as chronic periodontitis; common predisposing factor was a viral disease, and the leading risk factor was recognized as tobacco smoking. Main treatment options were supragingival plaque removal and systemic antibioticotherapy with clarithromycin by 7 days.

ANUG definition: Akut nekrotiserande ulcerös gingivit - Acute
Necrotizing gingivitis is part of a spectrum of disease termed necrotizing periodontal diseases. It is the most minor form of this spectrum, with more advanced stages being termed necrotizing periodontitis, necrotizing stomatitis, and the most extreme, cancrum oris. Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) refers to the clinical onset of NUG. Acute necrotising ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) is an opportunistic, non-infectious necrotising periodontal condition. It is caused by a mixed microbial infection, primarily of Prevotella, Fusobacterium and Treponema species. There are many predisposing factors, including immunosuppression, stress and smoking. Diagnosis is clinically determined. Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG) is a typical form of periodontal diseases.
