The symphony is centered on the Kaddish text. Originally intending to present the work for the 75th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1955, Bernstein did not turn his attention to his Symphony No. 3 until 1961. I wish I could be more positive about Ms. Bernstein’s contribution, but it strikes me that her efforts may well do more harm than good, reinforcing rather than allaying doubts about Kaddish, and delaying its acceptance into the musical mainstream. Although not of Mahlerian length, Leonard Bernstein’s “Kaddish” symphony is a work of Mahlerian ambition, scored for narrator, soprano, chorus, children’s chorus, and a large orchestra. The Jewish "Kaddish" is the prayer chanted for the dead, a hymn of praise to God's name.
